Gelocat Compounding & Waxing Service

Gelcoat compounding restores the worn exterior of your boat to like new condition. Most boats are made of wood which is then coated with a layer of fiberglass. To protect the fiberglass, boat manufacturers use a substance called gelcoat. Gelcoat protects the hull. It’s a hard finish, similar to the paint on an automobile, but made for a much harsher environment.

Gelcoat enhances the appearance of a boat with its high gloss finish, which can help it stand out in any setting. Keeping the gelcoat protected is the secret to keeping any boat looking like new and lasting longer.

Wax Your Boat To Protect The Gelcoat

Waxing your boat regularly is the best way to keep it looking new. The wax provides a slippery surface which makes it difficult for contaminants to stick to the surface of your boat. Things like stains from bird droppings wash right off. Dust cause less damage between washings and scratches the boat less.

Washing the boat becomes easier with less scrubbing which also leaves more wax on the boat.

Compound The Gelcoat To Restore The Surface

Once neglected, the gelcoat becomes dry and loses it’s shine. If neglected too long the surface can become powdery or even pitted due to oxidation. When this happens the gelcoat must be compounded.

Compounding the surface uses a fine grit sand-paper to remove a thin layer of gelcoat, along with all the surface contaminants. Compounding removes all the oxidation and restores your boats gelcoat to it’s factory finish. Once compounded the boat requires a wax job to seal the pores and protect the gelcoat.
